the federal problem-solving courts
James B. Moran Second Chance Re-Entry Court
The Second Chance Reentry Court, which began in 2010, helps those who are serving a term of supervised release following incarceration. The Reentry Court Team consists of U.S. District Court Judges, U.S. Magistrate Judges, U.S. Probation Officers, prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney’s office, and defense attorneys who work collaboratively to provide these individuals with the treatment, counseling, and structure necessary for them to successfully return to society employed and drug-free.

The Hon. Ruben Castillo SOAR Court
The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois’ Sentencing Options that Achieve Results Court (SOAR) program provides individuals facing criminal prosecution with an alternative to incarceration through a creative blend of treatment, sanctions, and incentives designed to address adverse behavior that underlies criminal conduct. The Federal Defender Program partners with the District Court, the U.S. Pretrial Services Office, and the U.S. Attorney’s office in all aspects of this program.

VETERANS TREATMENT COURT
The Veterans Treatment Court assists veterans charged with federal misdemeanors to address underlying behaviors and illnesses that may benefit from treatment. In collaboration with the John Marshall Law School, the program allows honorably-discharged veterans charged with a federal misdemeanor offense to enter into a diversion agreement with the U.S. Attorney’s Office. With assistance from the John Marshall Veterans Legal Support Center and Clinic, these veterans enter and complete programs focusing on PTSD, anger management, mental health, drug and alcohol addiction. Following successful completion of the program, their misdemeanor charges
are dismissed. The program is supervised by a U.S. Magistrate Judge.
